Live-Action Theatre Play
Tie It Up Theatre
Pre-Production, Production, Post-Production
We were approached by TiE It Up Theatre’s co-founder and producer David Chafer, to come on board and create a cinematic version of their new educational theatre production, I Love You, Mum, I Promise I Won’t Die. The production was initially created in collaboration with the Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation, to help raise awareness in young people about the dangers of recreational drugs.
With the piece dealing with such a sensitive and personal subject, we knew that we had our work cut out for us in order to do Mark Wheeller’s script justice. The play was already at an incredible level, we just needed to reflect that on film. The biggest challenge, as we found in the edit, was creating a piece of film that still retained the fundamental elements of live theatre.
Over the course of two days, we filmed the show more than five times, capturing the wide angles we’d use for the majority of the edit, before going back over key scenes to capture close ups of the show’s most emotionally devastating moments. Putting the show together in the cutting room was a painstaking task, but the feeling of satisfaction was unparalleled when that final version was approved by the producer, director, and the head of the foundation. I Love You, Mum will be shown in schools across the country next year.
